Harmony for Humanity at the Lizard Lounge

Just a quick follow up on the Harmony for Humanity show October 10th at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, MA. What a great night! Tony Savarino and the Savtones were just a killer house band, and all of the performers picked great tunes and were right on the money with their performances. The format of the show was to have everyone pick 2 or 3 cover songs to do and perform them with the house band. It was a real treat for us to front such a great band, and to enjoy a night of music with some awesome people.

I think the surprise treat for us was getting to see Mia Dyson for the first time. We had never heard of her before, but she’s been making great music for a long time. And she killed it. She and Susan Cattaneo did a really smoking version of Willin’ by Little Feat. Check her out- she has a new album that we really love.

By the way, I do realize how much I used “great” in this post. :)

Daniel Pearl Music Day Show at the Lizard Lounge, MA

Harmony-for-Humanity-Poster-2013-Final_smallWe are returning to New England again this year at one of the most beautiful times to be there- early fall. We have a handful of shows, and will catch up with good friends while there. This year, however, is a bit more exciting as we have been asked to participate in the 2nd Annual Daniel Pearl Music Day Show at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, MA. The show takes place on October 10th, Daniel Pearl’s birthday.

If his name sounds familiar but you can’t quite place it, Daniel Pearl was an American journalist with the Wall Street Journal who was kidnapped and subsequently murdered by Al-Qaeda in Pakistan in 2002 at the age of 38. His family has since started the Daniel Pearl World Music Days as a way to honor his memory. From their website:

Daniel Pearl World Music Days is an international network of concerts that use the power of music to reaffirm our commitment to tolerance and humanity. Since 2002, Daniel Pearl World Music Days has grown to include the participation of more than 10,000 performances in 129 countries. World Music Days is an awareness-raising program, not a fundraiser. There is no financial obligation to participate and all musicians are welcome.

The show we are taking part in is the brainchild of Dino Cattaneo, who shares not only Daniel Pearl’s outlook on tolerance and humanity, but also his birthday, and love for music. You can read about it and his thoughts on what this show means on his wife Susan Cattaneo’s blog. It’s well worth the read.

We are looking forward to this show! There’s an awesome house band, and the format is that different artists will get up and sing 3 covers with the band. We picked songs from The Band, Lucinda Williams, and Neil Young, and can’t WAIT to front a band! Looking forward to hearing the other artists’ selections as well, and enjoying a great night of music for a very worth while cause.

Let’s Lily It Up, Shall We?

This may not be a household phrase yet, but we are committed to making it so. Lily it up. Lilify. We also think that die hard fans of the Boxcar Lilies should be called “Lilliputians.”

The Boxcar Lilies are our good friends and an awesome folk/Americana trio. We love sharing shows with them and our secret wish is to have a mini-tour with them. And it’s not just our mutual love of Neil Young, it’s because we love their music and them. They have two great releases under their collective belt, and are really gaining momentum. We get to play with them again this coming weekend and we can’t wait.

Comment on Our First Wedding by Ann Peirce

Kate and Claudia made this such a special, memorable day for Trav and Carrie and for all of us! I can’t tell you how many guests commented upon how wonderfully they played and sang and how perfectly they set the tone of the entire wedding and reception. I can’t begin to express my gratitude for all that these two wonderful, extremely talented women did to make this a beautiful beginning for Carrie and Trav! Thank you!!

Our First Wedding

This past weekend, we played our first wedding, down in Atlanta. It was a gorgeous outdoor setting, and once the sun calmed down a little bit, we really enjoyed it. The bride and groom had a special request for the procession, and we played a nice mix of our songs and our versions of some tunes by Townes Van Zandt, Neil Young, and Bruce Springsteen before the ceremony. Being outside and having live acoustic music while guests arrived before the ceremony, and then for the procession, worked so nicely. It helped to set a tone for the gathering, and made the day a bit more special for everyone. We were glad to be a part of it. (Especially since the groom is my cousin!) I think we’d do another wedding given the chance. And if it’s in a setting as beautiful as this one, then all the better! Get married and hire us! – Kate
